The Horticultural Therapy Association of Victoria (HTAV) promotes the therapeutic and recreational benefits of horticulture. HTAV supports horticultural programs and activities which enhance the social, emotional and physical well-being of people in their homes and within the community.

The Edible Garden strategy was initiated and funded by the Department of Human Services under the Go for Your  Life program. The aim was to encourage everyone, including people with disabilities to grow vegetables, herbs and fruit to eat.

During 2005 and 2006, the HTAV conducted workshops to encourage Community Residential Units (CRUs) throughout Victoria to participate in the Edible Garden project.  Community Residential Units provide supported accommodation to people with a disability.

HTAV was involved in providing advice, assistance and instructions on how to create an edible garden to CRU Managers, staff and residents.

The aim of the edible gardens program was to enhance the health and well-being of people with a disability through improved nutrition, physical activity, increased social interaction  and an increased sense of achievement for those involved.
